Hello Financial Healers,
Yesterday I was tied up on a road trip. My 94 year old uncle, yes 94!, visited us from Colorado. It was a wonderful reunion. My uncle even got to visit his younger brother, which he hadn’t seen in 20 years.
This got me thinking about the importance of family. When we face the end of our lives, all that really matters is the people we have around us.
During this road trip I saw old pictures, heard stories, and visited key family sites. Some of these memories I knew. Some I didn’t.
We even found my great grandparents’s graves in an old cemetery outside of town. It was so powerful to see their headstones. I remember them faintly as a child, and it was wonderful to see and honor their names years later.
Legacy is key
As I wandered through the cemetery, I was amazed at how many peoples’s lives were reduced to a few simple words: Beloved Husband or Treasure Wife. This experience made me consider, Is there a way we can be remembered for more than just our names after we pass on?
I think there is…
I brought my oldest son, Cory, on the trip. He’s in his 30s and has a child of his own, now almost 2 years old.
Physically, my sons and their children are my legacy. But spiritually, they are Jesus’s.
At the end of my life, if I’ve done my job well, my children and grandchildren will carry on my ideas, principles, and lessons. I pray they’ll continue growing in my money ideas, too. Within generations, who knows where the De Silvas will be?
That’s the fun part about legacy. You get to impact generations hundreds of years in the future.
In a way, it lets us live on, long after we’ve passed.
Your homework for this week
This week I want you to talk with God and see how you can preserve a legacy for your family. Maybe you have an inspiring story about your great-grandparents? Write it down in a Google Doc. Share it with your family.
Or perhaps you have a precious artifact or heirloom? Take some pictures and upload them to Google Drive. Share it with trusted family members, so they can learn about its significance.
If you do this right, you can start a conversation that will last long beyond your years. Your grandchildren will remember the stories you’ve passed down, and your name won’t disappear. That is a treasure worth millions.
