ARE YOU WRESTLING WITH A MONEY LIE?
Years ago I met a woman I’ll call Nancy. Nancy had a problem. Whenever she sat down at her desk to work on her budget, pay bills, or do taxes, she froze. The solution, she thought, was to become more disciplined. She told me, “I need to reconcile my bank account, file my taxes, and pay my bills, but I can’t do it without accountability. Can you help?”
I told Nancy discipline and accountability were valuable, but skills based. Until she fixed her beliefs, her financial skills would continue to suffer.
In Nancy’s case, she believed lies about herself and her handling of money. These lies told her, I’m stupid. I’ve calculated incorrectly. I’m going to get in trouble.
What Nancy needed was a better belief system.
If you’re struggling to complete even simple tasks with money, consider that you, like Nancy, may simply need healthier beliefs.
Let’s say you believe you’re a failure. You might not use those exact words, but in the back of your mind, you fear your financial endeavors will end in catastrophe because deep down you believe you’re a failure.
Money lies are common, and they keep us trapped in cycles. Here are some lies I come across often in my coaching sessions:
“I’m so deep in debt that God can’t help me.”
“God would never help me because I don’t deserve to be helped.”
“I’m too stupid to understand money.”
“I can’t follow the Lord and have money too.”
“Tragedy always comes along and steals my progress.”
As you read this list, consider if you are struggling with any lies. Consider what you believe about yourself or your family. What messages keep playing in your head?
If a thought/belief doesn’t sound like Jesus, then it’s anti-Christ and needs to go. Here’s a simple question you can ask to help change your belief system: “Father God, is there a lie I am believing?” If the Lord says “yes,” you can continue with: “Father God, where did I learn this lie?”
These questions are important when dealing with a belief structure. Pose the question specifically to Father God, because He is the One who gives identity, protection, and provision.
God is outside of time, and as we get rid of the lies we believe about money, He re-edits our timeline. Many people walk out of their sessions, realizing, I feel so different! The lies are gone, and they get to learn the new truth growing in their hearts.
God wants to do that for you as well. You are not a struggling orphan, alone and abandoned. You are His child and a faithful steward of what He has assigned to you.
