Breaking old habits of poverty thinking
Is it possible to break the poverty mindset in your life, but find yourself still dealing with old habits that were formed in poverty?
When you think about checking your bank balance, do you start to feel anxious? Do you feel that way even though you know you have everything you need? That could be an old poverty habit.
When you walk out to your mailbox, does your stomach start to feel full of knots because there might be a bill? That could be an old habit, which you can change out for something better.
Or when you check your email and see an ad from a credit card company, does your heart jump—and not in a good way? It could be that your emotions are reacting because of a poverty habit, not because you are still trapped by a poverty spirit.
All of us have habits and trigger points that formed back when we were living under a poverty mindset.
Here are 4 steps you can take to change out old habits of poverty for new habits based on who you really are.
1. Pay attention to what you hear yourself saying about money. What words are you using? Do you keep putting yourself down?
You might notice old habits when you’re trying to negotiate with someone. Maybe you subtly make comments dismissing yourself, apologizing when you don’t need to, or explaining things when it isn’t necessary.
When you notice an old habit popping up, hold it in your mind so you can recognize it next time. Think of these habits like potholes. “I see that pothole coming, and I’m not going to drive into it this time. I’m going to go around it.”
2. Pay attention to when you feel anxious or overly concerned about money.
Every time you come across a familiar feeling of anxiety, start to recognize, “This is an old habit that can change. This is a little hiccup in my thinking that I am working out. I have been set free from poverty, and I no longer need to operate according to its habits.”
3. Ask the Holy Spirit, “What can I do differently now? What can I change?”
Listen to God, and write down three things you feel you should do differently in your life. Think of these like prophetic acts you’re going to introduce into your life. They can be big or small; don’t worry about the size or even if they make sense yet. Just listen to what the Lord says, and make a list of three things you can do.
4. Remember, things really are different now.
You don’t need to settle for the old habits anymore. If you’ve dealt with the poverty mindset, then you no longer need to follow its rules and regulations. A new day has dawned for you. And not just for you, but also for your family and future generations.
