A woman in my Prosperous Soul Foundations class recently confessed to hiding at her job by working for less than her qualifications justified.

She realized this habit was a condition of a poverty spirit, so she decided to change her story by requesting her value.

The Bible says a workman is worthy of his or her hire. But many people don’t view themselves as “worthy.” They choose to avoid asking for what they need because it requires them to be seen. They allow events to happen to them instead of making an impact.

There’s a big difference between stepping into confrontation because you’re a Prosperous Soul and attacking others because you feel threatened.

Attacking others might feel strong in the moment, but it’s actually a fingerprint of a poverty spirit.

If you’re lashing out, speaking without listening, or trying to “punish” someone, these are signals of a poverty mentality.

A hero mindset, on the other hand, is calm. They don’t talk down to others; they are in control of themselves and their emotions. When you’re the hero in a confrontation, you realize you belong and feel it’s okay to take up space.

A poverty mindset doesn’t feel justified in taking up space or even asking for it, but the hero recognizes, “We’re okay, but we have a disagreement, so let’s talk about it.”

Biblically speaking, here is what the hero mindset looks like:

“God is helping me do this.”

I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. (Phil. 4:13 NASB)

“I get to operate according to the kingdom of God.”

For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son. (Col. 1:13)

“I am a true hero in my thinking. The inside of me is not fearful, timid, or afraid. It is powerful, loving, and in control.”

For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline. (2 Tim. 1:7)

“The light of God is available to me, and I can apply it directly to every facet of my life, including money and business.”

That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. (Rom. 10:9)

The next time you choose to stand up for yourself, pay attention to how you respond. Are you acting like a hero? If you find something deep down inside that doesn’t look like Jesus, uproot it and get rid of it.
