Is having debt evil?
Is debt evil? Some people believe it is, but I’m not one of them.
The Bible says that all things are possible, but only some things are profitable. That’s how I think about debt.
Debt is like a fire.
A fire requires a fireplace to contain it, so you can harness the fire’s benefits without burning down your house.
When my house is cold and I want to light a fire, I don’t start stacking wood in the middle of the floor or over in the corner next to the bookcase—I build the fire in the fireplace, because only the fireplace has the capacity to manage the heat and flames.
Debt works the same way. If I have capacity, debt is something I can manage. But if I do not have capacity, I should not light a fire in the middle of the floor!
Debt is a powerful force that can destroy us if we lack capacity.
What about you?
If you’re struggling because you built a fire where it wasn’t supposed to go, don’t allow the enemy to use your current financial situation like a club over your head.
The truth is, you are a Prosperous Soul—a child of God who has a place in His kingdom. This season is only one part of the story, and you’re going to get through it.
Or maybe you’re in a tough place because of the pandemic, and increasing your debt load looks like the only way out. If that’s the case, carefully come up with a plan.
“What would this look like? How long would it take me to get out of debt? Is this a good idea for me and my household?”
Consider the situation, get advice from a financial coach—and pray.
Go to your heavenly Father and ask for help.
Father, Your Word says that anyone can come to You and ask for wisdom, and that’s what I’m doing right now. Please give me wisdom in the area of my finances. I don’t know what to do, but I trust You to show me the way I should take. Please remove shame and despair off my shoulders, and help me to hear Your voice leading me.
Be blessed, Prosperous Soul. You are not alone in the battle.
