Greetings Prosperous Souls,
A few weeks ago, I wrote a blog: 17 Signs of the Poverty Spirit. It sparked a lot of interest, so I decided to dive deeper into the topic.
Today, we’ll focus on the first 4 from this list, and break the spirit of poverty with a Financial Healing prayer.
The 4 traits we’ll focus on are:
Resentment when others succeed
Quitting in the face of trials
Quickly surrendering when confronted
Always blaming yourself
Let’s glance at each one now.
Resentment When Others Succeed
A poverty mindset makes you feel jealous of others’ success, even in areas you’re not pursuing.
When I struggled with poverty thinking, it was hard for me to celebrate other people, even if their pursuits were entirely different from my own.
At the root of this was the lie that I was being overlooked at my job. It wasn’t about others; I just believed I was worthless and forgotten.
Eventually, I handed this lie to God and accepted His truth that I was seen. Amazingly, a short time later, I received a call from my boss and secured a raise. Praise God!
Quitting in the Face of Trials
People influenced by a poverty mindset believe they can’t get ahead, no matter what. But Scripture says, “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” – Philippians 4:13 (ESV). It also reminds us, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” - John 16:33 (NIV). Resistance isn’t a sign that God is punishing you. It just means you’re alive! Poverty thinking keeps you from fighting for the breakthroughs you need.
Quickly Surrendering When Confronted
Those who struggle with a poverty mindset can’t handle feedback, even if it’s presented kindly. Deep down, they feel worthless. Confrontation affects them personally.
Prosperous Souls, in contrast, realize they have value and a divine calling. Their desire for growth outweighs their need to look perfect.
Always Blaming Yourself
A poverty mindset convinces you that every obstacle or challenge is your fault, even when it’s not your responsibility.
I remember when one of my clients experienced breakthrough in this area. She’d believed for years that her family’s disconnection from God was her fault. But when she finally let go of this lie, she experienced a level of freedom she never thought possible.
Today, she walks in a powerful prophetic gifting and inspires her family to do the same.
The Poverty Spirit is Tricky, But It’s Not All-Powerful
Each of these behaviors manifests differently, but they all stem from the same source: the poverty spirit. If you recognize any of these traits in your life, don’t be discouraged. You can break the spirit of poverty with a Financial Healing prayer, which we’ll work through together this afternoon.
