POVERTY LIES SURROUNDING YOUR WORTH

When the enemy whispers his lies to us, his words don’t come with warning labels. Neither are they spoken in third person so we can instantly tell they’re from the enemy. The devil doesn’t shout, “The devil thinks you’re a failure!” No, he’s much more cunning and murmurs things like, “I’m not enough. It’s never going to work. I’m lacking. I am worthless. I am a failure.”  

Lies are like weeds, and we know what to do with weeds.

Just as gardeners have been doing for thousands of years, we can pull these weeds—roots and all—and throw them into the fire. In the place of each of the lies we used to believe, we can plant the truth of the gospel until our gardens begin to flourish.

Let’s look at three lies commonly believed by followers of Jesus and replace those lies with God’s truth.

Lie: What I Think Doesn’t Matter

I have come across this lie again and again as I’ve ministered to people. Unfortunately, many of us have come to identify ourselves with those words: “My ideas don’t matter.”

If you feel you struggle with this lie, dig into the Bible and discover what God says about you and your ideas. Many verses could apply here, but for this specific lie, I recommend 1 Corinthians 2:16:

For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he will instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ.

Lie: I’m Rejected by God, Other People, and Myself

Even this lie can be uprooted. We need to learn how to “tune out” what the enemy is saying and fill ourselves up with the truth of the gospel of peace. As we do this, we set ourselves apart from the enemy’s strategy and step into a place of great power and strength.

If you struggle with feeling rejected, search the Scriptures and see what God says about His love for you. Pull out the lie in your thinking and replace it with the truth of God’s Word.

One excellent truth on this topic is found in Hebrews 4:16:

Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Lie: My Value Depends on My Intelligence, Strength, or Beauty

If you believe your worth is tied up in your brain power, your strength, or how you look, direct your thoughts toward Ephesians 2:10: 

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

As this verse declares, our value is based on God and the fact that He created us. Our worth is anchored in what Jesus has done, and we’re made in His image. We are the workmanship of God, created for good works in Christ. All of us have this value—including you.

Take this biblical truth and plant it inside your heart. Don’t let it be intellectual only, but make it a conviction deep inside you. God has handcrafted you and left you to be His workmanship on this planet. He will lead you, guide you, reinforce you, and equip you with every good work in Christ (Heb. 13:20–21).  

Choose God’s Way of Thinking

Let’s begin to “garden away” the lies and replace them with truth. When you find the truth in Scripture, take hold of it and plant it deep.

I encourage you to go after these things as a Prosperous Soul. Be faithful in what God is doing in your life, and don’t settle for anything that falls short of His glory.
